Frequently asked questions
What is Backstage?
Backstage is a management system for music publishers, record labels and catalog administrators. It brings together repertoire records (works, sound recordings and products), rightsholders and contracts, the receipt and distribution of revenue, and rightsholder payouts.
It has been in operation since 2020 and is developed by Clave de Som Desenvolvimento de Sistemas.
Does Backstage work with CWR and ECAD?
Yes. The system generates CWR files to register the catalog with societies and partners, imports acknowledgement (ACK) files with accepted, rejected or pending works, and imports work and sound recording records from ECAD.
Importing CWR files received from partners, used by those who work with sub-publishing, is part of the Internacional plan or can be purchased as an add-on.
Which languages is the system available in?
The interface is available in Portuguese, English and Spanish, and each user chooses their own language. Emails sent to rightsholders go out in the language of the person who sent them.
Does the system have a virtual assistant?
Yes. The virtual assistant answers questions in natural language about catalog data, such as works, rightsholders, sound recordings, contracts and distributions. It is purchased as an add-on.
How much does Backstage cost?
Plans are billed monthly, in Brazilian reais, and prices are per module: publishing (copyrights) or recording (sound recordings). If you run both, each module is subscribed separately.
- Light: R$ 250
- Profissional: R$ 850
- Internacional: R$ 1,000, including CWR import for sub-publishing
- Enterprise: R$ 1,500, including matching and sync licensing
What are add-ons?
They are features that can be added to a plan that does not include them yet for R$ 100 per month each: virtual assistant, automatic identification, bulk settlement, commissions, catalog sales, work equalization, inflation adjustment of advances, CWR import and sync.
From the Professional plan up, several of them are already included.
How does billing work?
Billing is in Brazilian reais, through a Mercado Pago subscription. You can choose between recurring payment and a separate payment each month.
How do I get started?
You can sign up directly in the system at https://app.backstage.mus.br, or request a demo through the website to get to know Backstage before subscribing.
How does the monthly rightsholder payment cycle work?
You record the amounts received and create the distribution with the files from each paying source; the system imports the lines and matches them to the catalog. During processing, amounts are allocated according to splits and contracts and posted to the current account of each rightsholder. Finally, paid rightsholders receive a payment email with receipt, royalty statement and proof of payment.
What happens to amounts the system cannot identify?
Lines that do not match any record are flagged as unidentified and can be manually linked to the right work, sound recording or product, based on suggestions from the system. Identified lines that cannot be paid yet, for example because the rightsholder has no bank details, remain withheld until the issue is resolved. Uploading the same file again does not duplicate records.
Does the system handle advances and commissions?
Yes. Advances are recorded as a debit on the rightsholder account and recouped from later distributions, with the option to apply interest. You can also record agent commissions, catalog sales and equalizations between rightsholders of the same work; these features are included from the Professional plan up or can be purchased as add-ons.
How is my company data protected?
The data of each company is kept isolated: each one sees only its own records and amounts. Access is controlled by permission profiles, which define what each user can see and do, including who can view financial amounts. The system also keeps a history of changes.
How do documents reach rightsholders?
Backstage emails the documents on behalf of the publisher: payment notice, receipt, royalty statement, proof of payment and financial position. Files are not attached: the email contains download links, and each document opens only with the CPF or CNPJ of the rightsholder. The delivery status of each email can be tracked in the system.
What is the Rightsholder App?
It is the Backstage Titulares app, where songwriters, performers and other rightsholders check their repertoire, receipts, royalty statements and financial statement from their phone or browser. There is nothing to download from an app store: just open the address and, if you like, add it to the home screen. Access uses a username and password provided by the publisher.
